Reports reaching us is that the Academic Staff Union of Universities have asked the Federal Government to demonstrate its commitment towards the union’s strike cause by releasing 50billion naira for the revitalization of the nation’s public universities. This is an update of the previous agreement of 220billion naira revitalization funds (READ HERE). The Union has stated that the 50billion naira will be an addition to the earlier released 20billion which was a part of the promised 220billion revitalization fund which was agreed by the government. Prof Biodun, the union’s president stated that the union is not asking the government to release the whole 220billion naira but requested a show of commitment to payment of the requested funds.

20billion naira was earlier released by the President of the Country, Muhammadu Buhari for payment of the outstanding lecturers arrears from 2009 to 2012. This update came up from the promise by the union to communicate its decision to the public on January 16th 2019.

Prof. Biodun stated that the federal government had promised to mainstream the academic funds in 2017 but this has not been implemented according to him. He indicated that if the government will make such promises again, there must be adequate steps to show forth good fate and some evidence of good will to show that those promises will be kept this time.

He also added that there was a shortfall in salaries which the government had promised to pay by tomorrow the 18th of January, 2018 and the union is anticipating the payment of those salaries. Pending the confirmation of these payments, the union has said that there will be a meeting with the federal government on further steps to be taken to resolve the strike.

With so many speculations in the air, there is hope of the strike being called off soon. Below are some tweets about the current decision by the union.
