The law of La Cram La Pour! Do you know that there are cases where you have to cram everything the night to an exam? There will always be situations where you haven’t opened up a particular subject or course to study and you have a big test or exam the following day. We have all been down this road. And you can’t possibly be thinking of how to start reading from the beginning to understand each point page by page. You have to CRAM! Obviously, too much cramming isn’t advisable, because it brings down your performance but it must be completely utilized when it is called for (important cases).
If you know how to cram properly, you might be more outstanding in an exam than a person who had been reading for that exam a long time ago. The only thing about cramming is that you forget what you cram with time. That is why it is more preferable to read with understanding. This causes it to stick to your brain for a longer time.
Cramming wouldn’t be your best bet in the higher institution, but it is important because
- There are courses and subject where you have to cram long definitions and formulas
- It helps you when your exam is very close and you still haven’t been able to understand the course
- When you are to answer German objective questions(Fill in the blank), you need to cram
So, if you want to be a guru when it comes to cramming, you should do this.
HOW TO CRAM EVERYTHING
STEP 1: EAT SOMETHING
Firstly, you have to recharge your stomach. No one can drive a car without fuel. Don’t try to take caffeine, eat something very healthy. Apples keep you focused even better than caffeine. You have to eat properly to get your mind off food because you need full concentration. I suggest you read my article on how to study with full concentration.
STEP 2: SET AN ALARM AND TAKE A NAP
Your body needs to be fully rested for what you are about to do. Cramming stresses the brain a bit so you obviously do not need a stressed body also. So set your alarm and take a nap to rest.
STEP 3: FIND A SUITABLE ENVIRONMENT
Next, go to an environment that suites you best. I will advise you go to a quiet place, so as to avoid distractions (put off your phones if possible). A table will be very good because you should stay away from your bed to avoid night crash. Also, your location needs to be properly lighted. I explained all this when I spoke about staying up longer in night class
STEP 4: SKIM THROUGH AND JOT IMPORTANT POINTS
This goes in line with remembering everything you read. Concentrate on the key points and do not waste your time on irrelevant things because you do not have time. So, you need to be smart. Write down these important points you come across because you will need them later.
STEP 5: RECITE OUT LOUD
So after writing out those points, write down all necessary definitions and any other important things. Then, read them about two times and begin to recite them aloud. This technique works like magic. If you have someone around, recite them to them while they hold your book to confirm if you are on point. I always do this with my sisters and it has helped me a lot. Do this till you can recite without mistakes.
STEP 6: TAKE A BREAK
Take a break and relax the brain from all the information pumped into it. This will help re-energize your brain for more assimilation. When you come back from the break, try to see if you can remember those things you crammed before. If you do, Well-done! You are almost there.
STEP 7: GO TO SLEEP
Finally, after you have successfully crammed that textbook or note, go to sleep and make sure you do not read anything else, so as not to confuse yourself. Wake up the following day and smash that exam!
To all those preparing for one exam or the other, I wish you great success.
