Working abroad can be a very strong boost to your finances and professionalism. For a Nigerian citizen, getting a job abroad can be very difficult due to the fact that Nigeria is less technologically advanced than those countries you might want to work in. So, you have to go an extra mile to be employed in a foreign country. To get a job abroad, you need proper information and sometimes connection.
There are actually job opportunities available for you to work abroad. There are countries in Europe, North America and parts of Africa that are actually ready to employ foreigners. Many people have complained of not getting any feedback from companies or organizations abroad when they seek employment. The question is; are you really doing it the right way?
I did some research on tips to getting a job abroad by asking people who have been successful in that area.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE TIPS
WRITE YOUR CV IN THE COUNTRIES PATTERN
Not all countries write their CV’s the same way. Europe especially has a whole different format of writing a CV. Get familiar with the CV format of the country you are applying to and align your CV in that manner. Also, state briefly why:
- You should be hired and
- You want to leave your country and work in theirs.

APPLY TO COUNTRIES WITH LOW POPULATION AND LOW SKILLED LABOUR
This category of countries is more likely to accept foreigners than countries with high population like China, India, etc. This is the reason why many Nigerians who have applied for jobs in the USA and in the UK have been rejected. Go after countries with low working class populations like Canada, New Zealand, Denmark, Czech Republic, etc. Many Nigeria can be found in such countries. For example, I have a friend who recently got a job in Finland with a very good pay.
HAVE GOOD SKILLS
Not many companies abroad are looking for people with regular skills. It doesn’t matter if you are a graduate or not, you must possess good skills which will be of value to them. Among all skills, the highest in demand abroad are Information technology skills (I.T skills). This is the reason why many software engineers and web developers are being recruited abroad. Also, Writing and Marketing skills among others are also in high demand.
APPLY ONLINE AND OFFLINE
Applying offline and in person can be more effective than stopping at just online application. If you have the chance to travel to your choice country and deliver your application, it gets you the job faster. Also, if you have a good and reliable agent in such country, you can use them as a link for physical application. If all of these aren’t possible, use an online application and do it to your very best. Also try as much as possible to always follow up your applications online and offline.
In conclusion, getting a job abroad requires determination. Hold and persevere to achieve your dream.
