Late night reading is sometimes inevitable for students because there is usually so much to cover in a short time and little time to cover them. You have classes to attend, assignments to do, projects to carry out, etc. So when exactly will you have the time to study? This is the reason why most students go to night class, to make up for lost time and read more.
NIGHT CLASS OR NIGHT CRASH?
But going to night class is one thing and staying up to read is an entirely different task. We are human beings and our brains are designed to accept the fact that the night time is for rest (sleep!). There are people who go to night class and sleep off after just 30minutes to 1hour of reading. Shout hallelujah if you’re one of them. You can’t actually blame them; they just haven’t discovered what they need to do to stay up longer in night class.

1. SLEEP BEFORE CLASS
Unless you are a vampire, there is no way you can dodge sleep all through the day and expect to be active at night. To stay awake at night and read, you have to have the strength to do so. So, you must take out time to sleep during the day as part of preparation for night class. Preferably 2 hours. It just works like garbage in, garbage out. The sleep you put in will bring out the energy to read later on.
2. BE DETERMINED
Your determination precedes your destination. There is a role of mental strength in achieving what you want. Be determined that you have come to read and not sleep. When you set a target, you align your mind and body towards fulfilling that target.
3. ACTIVE STUDY
This is the best way you can help yourself to stay up longer in night class. Don’t read in a dull manner. Let the reading session be an active one. Do well to jot down points, ask yourself questions and also answer them, practice past questions and be fully engaged in the studying process.
4. MAINTAIN A GOOD POSTURE
What you put in is what you get out. You have to sit in a proper alert position, so as to drive away traces of sleep. You can’t rest your head on a table in night class to read; 15 minutes tops you will be in dream land. So maintain a good posture so that you can concentrate fully and read more.
5. TAKE BREAKS
Studying in a particular position for a very long time can be very tiring. Do well to take few minutes break after some hours of reading. Take a break and chat with a friend, listen to some music or do something interesting. This practice drives away sleep from the body and makes you fully alert again. You can make use of 2 hours reading and 20minutes break pattern.
6. YOU DESERVE A TREAT
For me personally, I hate reading for long on an empty stomach. Can you drive a long distance without fueling your car? So during your break for example, you can give yourself a good treat. Get some snacks or eat some food so at to give your brain and body some energy to do more study. Don’t rely on caffeine or drugs to keep you awake. Eat some good food.

7. READ WITH GOOD LIGHT
Reading under dull light gives your brain the impression that you are trying to turn off those lights and have a good night rest. I remember once when I went to night class and I slept all through because the classroom had bad bulbs and my lamp was so low. I couldn’t last an hour reading. When you use bright light, it gives the brain the impression that it isn’t time for bed yet. So do well to always read with good light if you want to stay up longer.
